One of the great things about container gardening is that it gives you the flexibility to use a different range of containers to suit your garden design and creativity.
Before selecting a particular container, you should do a little bit of planning to assess what you’re trying to grow and where it will be placed in your home or garden.
There are plenty of choices including flowerpots, planter boxes, hanging baskets, old barrels and even specially made containers with in-built irrigation systems. If cost is a concern, you can just reuse any pots or planters you have laying around to get going first.
Here are a few tips to note when choosing containers for your container gardens:
- Size: Think about what you’re going to grow and choose the container to match the size of the plants or flowers
- Drainage: Make sure the container has adequate drainage holes and a reasonable size opening
- Pots: Terracotta Pots (watch out for dryness), Plastic Pots (make sure it’s sturdy), Ceramic Pots (a good option)
- Wooden Containers: Use rot resistant wood like Cedar or Redwood and avoid wood that has been treated by toxic chemicals
- Color: Consider using lighter colored containers if your container garden will be in the sun most of the time
In winter, you should take extra care as the containers may be exposed to harsh weather conditions.
